The Story Behind 4 rivers BBQ

The 4 rivers story begins with one family's deep love for Southern cooking. Founder John Rivers started smoking meats in his backyard in Sandy Springs, Georgia, inspired by the rich BBQ traditions of the American South. What began as weekend cookouts for friends and neighbors quickly grew into something much bigger.

The name 4 rivers pays tribute to the four rivers of Georgia — the Chattahoochee, Flint, Savannah, and Altamaha — honoring the land, the culture, and the communities that shaped this cuisine. Every recipe carries that heritage forward.

Today, 4rivers is celebrated as one of the finest smokehouse destinations in the region, serving slow-cooked meats, house-made sides, and genuine Southern hospitality every single day. We haven't forgotten where we came from — and we never will.

The Backyard Begins

John Rivers starts hosting weekend BBQ cookouts for friends and neighbors in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Word spreads quickly — the smoke is unlike anything locals had tasted before.

2011
First Location Opens

4 rivers opens its first official restaurant at 6700 Powers Ferry Rd NW, Sandy Springs. Lines form around the block on opening day. The 4 rivers BBQ legend is officially born.

2013
Award-Winning Recognition

4rivers smokehouse earns its first major award, being named one of the Top 10 BBQ Restaurants in the Southeast. The accolades validate years of hard work and dedication to the craft.

2016
Expansion Across the Region

Demand drives expansion. 4 rivers opens five new locations across Georgia and Florida, bringing the smokehouse experience to new communities without ever compromising quality.

2019
The Catering Division Launches
